I suppose the creators also said that they don't consider it as Monkey Island 5, but then again, these are the same people who said that they didn't include the option to click where to walk to in Tales of Monkey Island, because it was impossible to implement it in a 3D environment where the background moves... despite having already implemented it in all of their previous games (in other words, it's clearly just the marketing department lying as per usual).

I even heard that the controls were due to it being made for the Wii, despite the Wii version coming out slightly after the Windows version, and their other games which were also ported to the Wii, having perfectly normal point and click controls.

It doesn't matter which way you slice it, there's definitely some bullshit going on.

Also, while I definitely understand not counting DmC as a Devil May Cry 5, because not only is there an actual Devil May Cry 5 now, but DmC is very clearly a reboot with no ties to the original canon. But refusing to acknowledge Tales of Monkey Island as Monkey Island 5, is like refusing to acknowledge Streets of Rage 4 as the fourth Streets of Rage game. As a matter of fact, I think Tales of Monkey Island has more of a right to be called Monkey Island 5 than Streets of Rage 4 has to be called Streets of Rage 4. It's not like Streets of Rage 4 shares developers or even an artstyle with its past entries. Tales of Monkey Island on the other hand does.

I'd call it MI5, but having experienced its episodic release I can understand it:

It started with ToMI Episode 1, then after a month came Episode 2 etc.
So you had those separate episodes and not a finished unit of a game for about half a year. Calling it MI5 felt strange back then.

That's true. I agree with that.
