Let's face it, the thing almost every makes in Minecraft is a recreation of a sprite from a popular game. I haven't... but only because I couldn't be bothered to put in that much effort copying something, pixel for pixel. I prefer to at least pretend to be original when putting effort into something. I have on the other hand recreated a space invader sprite on Dwarf Fortress, and that requires a lot more effort, with a lot less pay off since you can't see it without a visualizer. But hey, I was bored.
But I digress, this comic isn't about me complaining that people are unoriginal on Minecraft, it's about the fact that despite having a tool which gives near limitless possibilities, the most any of us ever do (including me) is mess about without actually doing anything spectacular.
As for Doug's reaction to Steve's creation, that's just Doug being Doug, and serves no meaning other than to be a punchline.
