The Sims 4 has cults, and they're called clubs, and The Sims is quite well known for changing certain words to make them appropriate. So who knows, maybe it was intentional.
Still definitely one of the best features in The Sims 4 though. Although it's also one of the very few unique features that The Sims 4 has, so there's not much that it's competing with.
