Firstly, you can have pretty decent games without NPCs. But all of decent games without NPCs, are
almost all purely competitive. A good example I think is Fortnight. And while Fallout 76 does have some NPCs (kind off), there's not many. Clearly they were wanting the players to take the role of the NPCs, but they didn't include the functionality to do that.
But that's not the point that's just the punchline, the point I'm trying to make is that PCs (that's playable characters) are all assholes. You don't really need to look any further than a JRPG to figure that one out, breaking into people's homes and stealing their stuff. But if you do look further, then my example of a game without NPCs is also a great example of why PCs are so horrible. I mean, just imagine a world full of Call of Duty players acting exactly like they do on Call of Duty, all running around like headless chickens shooting each other!
When all of these political idiots start calling the opposing side NPCs, they don't realize that they're implying that they're a PC, which in turn means that they're a psychopath that would gladly use people to reach their own ends. Because lets face it, even when you're playing a game as nicely as possible, you're still just a psychopath who is using people just to reach a very specific goal, while going along a pre-set route that someone else has already laid out for you, whether that be to save the world or win the match.
An NPC on the other hand, sits idly by while performing useful functions. A world full of PCs is a clusterfuck. While a world full of NPCs is more or less peaceful.
What I'm trying to say is, don't go using NPC as an insult. Because in reality, you're insulting yourself. And I hate it when people are too dumb to realize they're insulting themselves, and as a result think you're the one being the idiot by pointing it out!
That's like my number one pet peeve!
If you really want to insult someone, just call them a hipster! It'll actually hurt their feelings!

How about a Sim Character with free will turned on? Nah those guys are idiots too.
Something in-between a PC and an NPC.
