I remember seeing someone complain about this once on a certain other webcomic back when the Switch released. And... well... it's been bugging me ever since.

For some completely incomprehensible reason that can only be explained by a conspiracy theorist, the accept and cancel buttons were swapped in English speaking countries around the time of the PS1. And no one seemed to notice.
I used to think that it was weird that sometimes the X would be cancel and the O would be accept on some Japanese titles, such as Final Fantasy VII. But when you've played on a SNES controller for a while, you realize that it's much weirder that X is accept and O is cancel.

Why was it suddenly swapped around?
And don't say it was for "cultural reasons", because people certainly didn't have a problem with it during the NES and SNES days.
It's become a manufactured cultural difference, and I want to know whose bright idea it was to begin with, so I can go over there and flick them on the nose!
