I had never actually played a dating sim, because I figured they were all crappy games that were made for sad people with no lives. But I figured that was a bit of an unfair assumption, and that I should at least try one. So I figured I'd start with a fan translated PS1 game (for no particular reason).
Overall, I found it very fun. Dating sims (proper ones, not the romantic visual novels) are kind of like casual RPGs. Bloody Bride has more of an emphasis on the RPG side of things, with a tacked on battle system, but still the entire experience is quite enjoyable.
In terms of story, it's a bit crap. If Bloody Bride was an actual anime, I would've dropped it after the first episode. But as a game, I found it really fun. A bit long winded, and with the ending leaving you feeling as though you've achieved nothing, but overall a fun experience.
If you're looking for a casual RPG, I'd highly recommend it.
On the other hand, if you're easily offended, then I highly recommend that you stay well away. The game is definitely made with Japanese culture in mind, and it's no wonder it was never officially translated. There's no gore or explicit nudity, but I can think of at least two scenes most people would find issue with.
