I have three working theories for what the secret of monkey island is. (Spoilers ahead for Monkey Island and Thimbleweed Park, you've been warned.)
The first is that the secret of monkey island is a game. And that this revelation was going to be revealed in Monkey Island 3, but was instead used in Ron Gilbert's latest game Thimbleweed Park. I had this theory long before Thimbleweed Park came about as well, so it lines up quite nicely.
The second theory is that the secret of monkey island is as simple as the fact that the giant monkey head leads into hell. I mean, it's kind of an obvious answer if you think about it. Occam's razor and all that.
The third, is that they simply thought it sounded cool.
I have absolutely no idea what the secret of mana is. My best guess would be the number 42. Assuming there even is a secret, considering the original Japanese title.
